Come to Your Senses!

In the Beginning…

We are equipped to easily find and always know our Creator. To help us on our journey, He provides us with 5 keen senses to act as portals to His Divinity. When we heighten our senses with prayer, we discover God!

Let’s explore the possibilities!

The sense of…SMELL

The olfactory area in our brain is located very near the hippocampus, where memory resides. Simply put, our sense of smell is the closest link to things remembered. How often do we smell something that takes us back to another time and place? God is limitless! Could He be offering moments of eternal awareness? Is He bringing us a fond memory that now exists beyond this world? Allow incense to lead our souls to heaven. Inhale, and enjoy the fragrance of God’s Grace!

The sense of…TASTE

If we truly think about what food means to us, eating can be a wonderful spiritual experience. Do we first bless our food and those at our table? Sharing a meal can be a generous communal act. Family meals can be sacred time. When we offer a fast, it enhances our appreciation of food as it sends forth well needed graces. We are united with all believers, with the angels and saints in the great Messianic Feast of the Eucharist. It is true…we are what we eat!

The sense of…TOUCH

In the early church, the “Laying on of Hands” was introduced as a spiritual gift of healing in Jesus’ Name. Still today, this public act of faith symbolizes the recognition that God is doing something unique and special. Sensation of healing heat can be felt leaving the healers hands and may also be received by the patient. Sorely missed during the pandemic, a tap on the arm, a handshake, or a hug goes a long way! (If we could only touch the hem of His garment!) In good fellowship, reach out and touch someone!

The sense of…HEARING

What type of music lifts our spirit or relaxes our mind? Do we allow the sounds of nature to soothe our souls? Careful listening makes us better friends and more loving companions. Texting is great, but it doesn’t replace the sound of a loved ones’ voice. No doubt, prayer helps us become more attentive listeners. Let the Word of God enter our ears and may we hear the cry of the poor. And listen to this…the first language of God is silence, where we hear the prompting of the Holy Spirit!

The sense of…SIGHT

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder…God is beauty itself! Enjoy the vast views and majestic sunsets! Open our spiritual eyes and find God everywhere! What we see effects every part of us! Surround ourselves with beautiful, holy things, and experience the effects of their goodness. Jesus promises sight to the blind. With perseverance, God will correct our distorted self-images and we will see clearly the truths in our world. Behold, He makes all things new!

Taste and See the Goodness of the Lord! Ps 34:8

We should not take our senses for granted. Some of us do not have full access to one or more of them through illness or injury. Perhaps, the other working senses become more sharpened and perceive God’s presence more intimately. God works strongly through our weaknesses.

We should also guard carefully what we allow to pass through these portals. It is precisely through our senses where evil creeps in ever so slowly and tries to become the accepted norm in our broken secular society. Protect ourselves and especially our children!

The Sixth Sense

Knowledge or understanding without reasoning, or call it a hunch, we cannot discount the gift of intuition sometimes known as the 6th sense. Those who walk with the Lord truly know it comes from the Spirit Himself guiding us to holiness. Give thanks for this gift and may we always listen to our inner voice!

Do you think our world needs a wake-up call? Let’s COME TO OUR SENSES and acknowledge our consciences! Praise God in this short life and live through the lens of His love. Sing the familiar tune and ask God to fill up our senses…and come love us again, again and again!

Use your senses, enjoy the blessings

Until our next walk through the garden
